Pagan Coming Out Day- Holding Space

pcodcc

Holding Space for those who are coming out.   Most of us know what it means to ‘come out.’ For some of us this process is easy and for some of us this process is riddled with fear and anxiety.  For those of us who have already come out it is easy to forget that is can be a real life struggle for some. This doesn’t make them weak or less capable than us, it makes them fresh to the idea of acceptance. Today we mark International Pagan Coming Out Day, a day in which we as a community step out of our bubble and hold space for those who might join us as free-thinkers and spiritual seekers. This morning over coffee I found myself thinking about what I could do to help and came to a brilliant conclusion. I could hold space for them, I can stand as a guardian for them, I could open my heart to them and even if I can’t do this literally, I could do this spiritually. I jumped up and ran over to the altar, dressed a candle and sat in silence for a few moments. I remembered my own coming out, I remembered my friend’s coming out, I remembered that some of have had a really difficult time with this.  Simply by holding this space for them we are acknowledging their process, we are being aware for them. So I urge you, if you have just a few moments today, hold space for them, say a prayer for those who are taking this huge step today. Be the ally you needed when you came out.

Ruth Barrett’s True Colors

Ruth Barrett’s True Colors For the past year and a half I have been holding onto a secret. I kept this secret for two reasons, the first being that it involved the members of my own coven and the second being that I was afraid to fan the flames of hate. After recent events I feel it important however to let go of this secret for the good of this community. At Pantheacon 2012 the Living Temple of Diana and the then CAYA Grove of Artemis joined forces to create an inclusionary ritual. The ritual, Rite of the Bear Mother, was a follow-up to the transphobic responses from events at the previous year’s Pantheacon. It was successful and made a big public step forward for those of us who were fighting for equality. Just a few short weeks after Pantheacon I received a certified letter in the mail from a lawyer on behalf of Ruth Barrett. In this letter it was made clear that Ms.Barrett was trying to claim infringement over the name of my small Goddess coven, The Living Temple of Diana, citing a trademark that she had taken out for her group, The Temple of Diana. The lawyer demanded that I give up control over the group’s website to Ruth Barrett, that I provide bank account information for any money collected by the temple and hand it over to her, and that we cease the use of the name immediately. The trademark she was trying to enforce was for her for-profit business, Temple of Diana, a business she uses to sell her classes, music and services. She was claiming that somehow our use of Living Temple of Diana was cutting into her profits. We however are a 100% cost free religious organization that has never charged for…
