Personal Bio
Hello! My name is Devin Hunter and you have found your way to my bio page. I have to admit, this might be slightly unconventional, but I hate writing bios for my projects- it makes me feel somehow disconnected. If I had my way, I would get to shake your hand, look at you in the eye, and connect with you one-on-one. However, since we can’t do that- I hope that you will get to know me as I tell you a little about myself.
I was born and raised in Southern Ohio, just west of the great Serpent Mound. I feel lucky, especially now as I look back, because I had an incredibly supportive spiritual family. Even though my mother is Christian and my father Pagan, I was afforded a rare luxury- my parents listened to and supported my spiritual experience. Though there are several reports of psychic phenomenon in my mothers family I showed a closeness with the spirit world even from a young age. I can remember the first time I realized that I was different- like most you reading this, that moment when it dawns on you just how different you are from others was a scary but empowering experience for me.
Until adulthood I was quite the loner. I was the guy who preferred animals to humans, a babbling brook to a busy street, and the spirit world to our own. I spent hours studying and playing music which would become a staple in my spiritual life.
I began reading cards when I was twelve and by the time I was sixteen I was reading on the weekends at a friend’s store at the local flea-market. I began my formal study of Witchcraft at that time as well, studying with Lady Melissa of the Northern Star Wiccan Tradition. Two years later I received my 3rd degree, and by 2006 I had received my 3rd degree within The Cult of Diana.
I spent a lot of time with the pagan community going to anything and everything I could. If there was an open circle, I was there, a festival, I was there. I began to tour from festival to festival teaching workshops on witchcraft, offering readings, and selling witchcraft supplies out of the trunk of my car. While touring I was invited to speak and lead two workshops at a local community gathering, and it was there that I was called “Generation X’s answer to Modern Witchcraft.” by the Pagan Community Council of Ohio (PCCO). The next year I joined the PCCO and became secretary of the board in a few months, and the following year the Vice President of Public Relations.
I learned a lot in my time with the PCCO. I learned even more about the beauty of our community, what we were capable of when we all put our hearts and wills together.
In 2009 my life changed in ways that I don’t exactly know how to describe. While teaching and vending at a festival I met two men who owned a store in California called The Mystic Dream. While there, they offered me a spot as a guest reader in their store which was almost 2,500 miles away. Late that fall I flew out to California and soon declared to the surprise of most of my friends and family that California was going to be my new home.
Since then I have managed The Mystic Dream and have been it’s resident Medium and Psychic. In March of 2010 I began what was at the time one of the most ambitious projects to date: The Modern Witch Podcast. After spending so many Summers touring and meeting several interesting pagans and practitioners of the craft, studying with amazing teachers, and late night fire-side chants with some really amazing people gave me a wealth of allies that I could share with the rest of the world. The inspiration for the show truly came from the simple fact that I knew witches were reading books by people they had never met, listening to music from people they had never met, but most importantly these authors and musicians were not able to always meet with and share with those who were reading their books or listening to their music. The Modern Witch Podcast was my way of helping our community connect with the voices who were leading it.
To my surprise the show was a fast success in podcast terms. I was broadcasting to people from all over the world from Russia to Japan, the US to Portugal. Witches were out there, just as thirsty as I was for magickal knowledge.
The popularity of the show soon put me in a predicament. People began to ask me what my opinion was on some of the controversial topics of the time, in particular my thoughts on sexism in the craft. I now believe this was strictly the work of the Goddess.
After my initiation as Priest into the Cult of Diana I was told that I would never be as sacred as my sisters who were on the path. This loosely translates to: because I was male, I would not be counted among those who were doing the ‘real’ work. I remember being told that my job was to stand on the outside of the circle and hold space for the women to do their work. At the time I accepted this as a truth- because it was what I knew, what my teachers had taught me, however years later I had come to a much different awareness. So when the topic of sexism came up in the pagan community I ended up exposing a very sensitive spot for me to the public. I was a man who belonged to a Goddess tradition and due to ignorance and fear I had been denied my rightful place next to the powerful priestesses I had studied with, loved, and had invited into my life. I soon created The Living Temple of Diana as a response to this and the rest is history!
Rowan joined me as co-host of my show in 2011 and since then we have been working hard! What I like about our relationship is that this is a woman who knows how to get stuff done! We share a similar vision and hold similar values. In the Spring of 2012 we released the first volume of The Modern Witch Magazine together and began a new journey as partners.
These days I seem to be spending the majority of my time doing what I have always done- exploring my spirituality with others. As the House Medium and Manager of The Mystic Dream I not only get to see and work with clients on a regular basis but I get to live my spirituality! You can’t beat that! You can expect to find more Modern Witch coming your way as this is one project I am so proud to be a part of.
